Hampshire bowler Kabir Ali will miss the start of the season with the ankle injury he suffered in Barbados.

Like Glenn McGrath before the Edgbaston Test during the 2005 Ashes, Kabir sprained his ankle after stepping on a stray ball during a pre-match warm up.

It is the latest injury to have beset Kabir since his move to Hampshire from Worcestershire.

He said: “I did all the hard work this winter and then, unfortunately and through no fault of mine or anyone’s, I just sprained my ankle a bit and it’s a little bit worse than we thought it was.

“Basically I landed on top of the ball and it’s a little more than just a sprain.”
