King crowned World Champion
SOUTHAMPTON'S Dani King has helped Great Britain successfully defend their women's team pursuit crown at the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne.
King, Joanna Rowsell and Laura Trott set a new world record time of 3mins 15.720secs in the final to beat hosts Australia.
Australia had opened up a lead of more than a second on the British team in the gold medal race, but paid a heavy price for setting off too fast.
King and Co produced a perfectly paced ride and ruthlessly reeled in their tiring opponents to claim gold.
The incredible final capped a scintillating day on the track, in which the pursuit world record was broken three times.
Britain held the record entering the championships, but lost the time to Australia in qualifying. Minutes later, though, they reclaimed it as they booked their place in the final in impressive fashion, where they would smash the time again.
