McMillan ready for London Handball Cup
DAN McMillan will take another step towards the Olympic Games when he competes for Great Britain in this week’s London Handball Cup.
The 29-year-old, from the Hampshire village of Sway, is part of the team that will take on Tunisia, Argentina and South Korea – champions of the African, American and Asian continents respectively – over the next three days in Crystal Palace.
All four countries have qualified for this summer’s Olympics, meaning the competition will provide Britain with a good indicator of their progress ahead of the Games.
McMillan said: “This is the biggest tournament we have played, and is the biggest handball tournament on British soil ever, so it is massive for us as part of our preparations.
“For us, we need to see where we are and test ourselves in front of a home crowd and prepare as well as we can.
“As long as we can keep to our gameplan, philosophy and strategies then there is no reason why we can’t be competitive against these teams.”
The London Cup has helped bring the Olympics into sharp focus for the team.
“It’s obviously here in London, so people are talking about the Olympics, and we trained in the Olympic Park earlier this week, so it’s starting to hit home,” said McMillan.
“But we are all staying focused and taking each competition at a time.”
Britain start their London Handball Cup campaign against Argentina tonight (7pm), before facing Tunisia tomorrow (7pm) and rounding off their week against South Korea on Saturday (3pm).
