Cup battle would have made Ken chuckle
7:30am Saturday 12th May 2012 in Sport
FINALISTS: Ken Caldwell Cup final. From left, Winchester Club A: Graham Bradshaw, John Mills, Lawrie Lemond, Aarron Bell, Piers Thomas (capt). Winchester Club B: Barry Ennever (capt), Phil Mort, Alan Coombes, Rich Hume, Mark Pedder, Geoff Rowlands.
THE late Ken Caldwell would have chuckled with delight as the drama unfolded.
Two teams from his former club were separated by just one point in the five-frame aggregate points final of the Winchester City & District Snooker League’s knockout cup named in his honour.
Winchester Club B hero Geoff Rowlands clawed back a 59-point deficit in the last frame to record the most unlikely of victories.
But at least Winchester Club A can console themselves with the knowledge that they played a part in a remarkable final that will be dissected in the bar for many years to come.
