Spitfires' second-half show delights Baird

Eastleigh boss Ian Baird admitted his side were “a bit fortuitous” to emerge from yesterday’s Blue Square Bet South derby at Havant & Waterlooville holding a one-goal half- time lead.

But, come the final whistle, there was no doubt in his mind that the Spitfires fully deserved their 3-0 win after a masterful second-half display.

Moses Ademola, two-goal hero of Saturday’s 3-0 home victory over Weston -super-Mare, was on the scoresheet again at Westleigh Park, applying a close-range finish to Daryl McMahon’s 32nd-minute corner.

Both teams hit the woodwork late in the first half with Eastleigh’s Craig McAllister latching onto Jack Dovey’s long goal kick and striking the post from 20 yards before Havant’s Christian Nanetti’s free-kick came off the underside of the bar and Sam Page prodded the follow-up wide.

“I felt at half-time that we were a bit fortuitous to be ahead,” said Baird. “For all that Havant didn’t create too many chances, I thought they outbattled us.

“But we got a reaction from the lads and in the second half we were superb. We passed the ball very well and scored goals at good times. In the end it could have been four or five.”

It was the industrious Marvin Williams who put clear daylight between the teams, smashing the ball in from McAllister’s cross in the 55th minute – the former Salisbury frontrunner’s first goal of the campaign.

Seven minutes later set-piece maestro McMahon delivered an inch-perfect corner for the towering McAllister to head into a gaping net.
