Footage has been released of a policeman being thrown to the ground as he tries to stop thieves making their getaway in a van.

Pc Gareth Lowe, 34, can be seen clinging on to the passenger side of the van before it speeds off down the road and he is thrown on to the tarmac.

The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated in hospital. He has since made a full recovery and is back on the beat, West Midlands Police said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the burglary at a tile company in Upper Balsall Heath Road, Birmingham, which took place at around 2am on May 13.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on police bail.

Detective Constable Michelle Beasley, from Stechford CID, said: "Pc Lowe was extremely lucky on the night in question - the people in the van showed a complete disregard for him and he was left lying in the street.

"His injuries could have been far worse, even life-threatening. Fortunately back-up was on hand and, after receiving treatment at the scene and in hospital, Pc Lowe is back on the beat.

"However our investigation is ongoing and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice. We still really need members of the public who think they can help our inquiries to come forward.

"Were you in the area on that night in May? Do you recognise the van in the CCTV clip? If you have any information that you think could help our investigation then please call as soon as possible."

Anyone with information should contact West Midlands Police on 101.
