A SOUTHAMPTON school has closed today after a bout of sickness.

Townhill Infant School has shut after high levels of absence among staff and pupils.

It is the latest in a number of city schools to close due to illness in the classroom.

Regents Park School closed on January 31 until February 4, Oasis Academy Mayfield closed on January 31 and February 1 and Redbridge Community School was closed for three days earlier this month.

Townhill head Bev Corbin said in a statement: "This is a precautionary measure in order to limit any further outbreaks.

"Parents were informed on Friday after monitoring the absences over the last week.

"We thank you for your understanding during this closure and ask parents to contact the school if they have any queries."
