The atmosphere was buzzing in the Honey Tent, where the prestigious British Beekeepers Blue Ribbon had been awarded for more than 100 entries.

“This is the first time we have qualified for this,” said Romsey and District Beekeepers’ Association Secretary Peter Hurst, who is also Romsey Mayor. “We are really pleased to see such a variety of honey and wax products entered for the show at a very high standard.”

Bakers had been buzzy on the home front by producing a honey cake to an authentic wartime Mrs Beeton’s recipe. The sticky cake entries took pride of place in the tent, alongside chutney, biscuits, honey combs, mead and wax products.

Children were encouraged to try rolling their own candles and there was a fascinating observation hive on display. The association welcomes new members and offers taster sessions to give people the opportunity to wear protective clothing and try bee-handling at the apiary. For further details, call 01794 502819.
