The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are to visit Romsey this summer.

The Royal couple will visit the town to help celebrate the 400th anniversary of the granting of the charter by King James I, in 1607.

Romsey's Town Mayor, Councillor Mike Richardson, said: "We are very privileged indeed to have been chosen. I am sure that Romsey residents will be delighted to hear that a visit will take place and that our welcome for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will outdo even the normal high level of support given to events and activities in our town."

The Queen and Duke attended the 350th anniversary charter celebrations in 1957, when their visit was broadcast live on radio. The Royal couple were regular visitors to Broadlands while Lord Mountbatten was alive.

The Queen's last official visit to the area was in 2003, when she officially opened the visitor centre at the Hillier Arboretum, in Ampfield.

Anyone wishing to find out more about the Royal visit can do so at a public meeting being held in Romsey Town Hall next Tuesday (April 17) at 7.30pm Details of the visit will be published in the Romsey Advertiser next week.
