SIR – Oh how I agree with Rita Mitchell of Woodley Lane about the need for bells on bicycles.
As someone with a walking impairment who has to walk on country lanes I am often startled and frightened by cyclists coming up fast and silently from behind, and often passing very close.
It may not be 'cool' to have a bell on a bike, but nor would it be 'cool' to cause a heart attack or any other accident..
There needs to be a change of heart in the cycling fraternity, or government legislation to make the fitting of bells compulsory.
