THERE was a fanfare by trumpeters from the Royal Engineer and short speeches by Bonfire Boys chairman, Ted Bowman, Sir Alec Rose, and the carnival queen, Eileen Veck.
Afterwards, the procession toiled its way around the narrow streets with bunting stretched between the houses.
The revelry erupted into a cascade of fireworks as the mammoth bonfire was lit on the recreation ground – a beacon to thousands more from miles around to enjoy the fun of the fair.
