A NEW Romsey orchestra has held its first concert.

More than 100 residents attended the concert held by The Romsey Chamber Orchestra at the Romsey School.

The orchestra was set up last year by budding musicians Jenna Gover, 33 and Stephen Smith, 65.

Jenna who plays the flute said: “Setting up an orchestra has been a long standing idea and dream of mine for more than ten years.

“We have had so much interest since starting up last year and it has been just incredible to see this dream come alive.”

The orchestra played Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Mozart’s Flute Concert and Haydn’s Symphony 101.

When asked about how the concert went Jenna said: “It was a tremendous success.”

She added: “I am still buzzing now and we had so much great feedback about all of the playing which was just fantastic to hear.”

Jenna, who has played flute for the past 22 years, said she was “nervous but excited” about the concert.

She said: “When we were rehearsing on the day of the concert it hit me that it was really happening.”

Stephen Smith a former director of army music, who retired to Romsey two years ago also helped to arrange the event.

Jenna said: “When I first met Stephen I knew we both had the same vision.”

Resident Jeffrey Williams whose daughter is part of the orchestra said: “The players of this fledgling orchestra coped admirably and are to be congratulated.”

The orchestra are set to hold a summer concert on June 30 but a venue is yet to be confirmed.

Jenna added: “We are looking to recruit more string players and also a trumpet player.”

The orchestra currently meet every Wednesday at The Romsey School from 7.30pm until 9.30pm.
