A FOOTPATH in Romsey is set to close as part of an on-going flood alleviation scheme.

The Romsey Extra Footpath along The Causeway running from the bypass to Sadlers Mill is set to close temporarily from May 24 until November 24 or until completion of the work, whichever is sooner, as part of the £6m Romsey flood alleviation scheme.

An alternative route has been given which will take walkers from for The Mears to Newton Lane to Middlebridge Street.

Reasonable facilities will be provided to allow access to adjacent premises while the work is being carried out.

A spokesperson from Hampshire County Council said: “Hampshire County Council and the Environment Agency have been developing a range of flood alleviation measures for Romsey. The closure of the Romsey Extra Footpath 705 is to allow for works in connection with the construction of two weirs and bridges as part of the Romsey Flood Alleviation Scheme.”

The proposals, designed to prevent flooding, have been drawn up by the Environment Agency and Hampshire County Council.

Residents gave mixed reactions to the plans at a public meeting held in Crosfield Hall in March.

A spokesperson from the environment agency said that the drawings for the bridges will be available in the coming weeks.

He said: “As part of the scheme we have started installing access tracks, boundary fencing and site compounds. Plans for construction are set to take place in early June.”
