A HAMPSHIRE boy has been left battered and bruised after being hit by a car next to a main road.

Jack Dickson, from Bracken Road in North Baddesley, was attempting to cross Rownhams Lane on his bicycle when a woman crashed into him after turning from Botley Road.

Now the 13-year-old is relying on crutches and has been left "frustrated", as he has to rely on his family to drive him to and from school, according to his mother.

Jack's mother, Christiana Dickson, said: "I got a call at around 3.25pm on Jack's phone and a passer-by who stopped to help him spoke to me.

"Another car let Jack go across the bike crossing when he was knocked off it by this woman and rolled. He got up straight away and tried to move off the road.

"Jack was in a lot of pain and I was in immediate panic when I got the call. I was picking up my eight-year-old daughter before and we drove straight there after we found out, because he is my baby.

"Jack was in the recovery position when I got there because the passer-by who stopped to help was a retired nurse, who thought it was the best thing to do."

The 43-year-old added: "He was a bit shaken up after it happened and was annoyed when he was first on crutches, because he is not able bodied and was struggling to walk on crutches which stressed him out."

"The woman who hit Jack seemed to be in her 30s and would have been only going ten miles an hour. It was not a hit and run and she seemed very worried."

Jack, who attends The Mountbatten School, was rushed to the children's accident and emergency department at Southampton General Hospital, Tremona Road, to have an X-ray on his leg.

Now Christiana believes the crossing needs to be put "further back" from the main road to help keep other children safe.

She added: "They should put some flashing lights there as well, because as a driver you are concentrating on other things and this woman would have been making sure that it was clear for her to go into the road."

The crash happened on September 20.

A spokesperson from Hampshire police said: "We were called at 3.40pm to a collision between a car and a bicycle. The rider was taken to hospital with a minor knee injury."
