A MEN'S social group that battle isolation has unveiled an extension they built themselves.

Romsey Men’s Shed members welcomed more than 40 guests to the official opening of the £9,000 social extension.

Chairman of the men's shed, Malcolm Kaill led the opening with Cllr Mark Cooper, Deputy Mayor of Test Valley Borough Council, cutting the ribbon.

The men's shed extension, which was built by members of the group, will make room for more social events, weekly meetings and repair sheds.

Chairman Malcolm Kaill said: "We are particularly excited today since soon after opening our workshop in early 2018, it became clear that it would not be big enough for our growing membership.

"What we needed was a space for quieter activities like an art group, games, and discussions‘

"Romsey Men's Shed is a self-help group and charity that aims to counter isolation in mainly older men and to promote healthy lifestyles.

The men's shed is located at The Romsey School.

He added: "We do that by having fun and getting more involved - working together on practical projects that benefit the local community, repairing everyday items to extend their life, make things for sale from recycled wood.

"Not to mention enjoying social activities like visits, talks and friendly competitions."

Cllr Mark Cooper said: “I am very pleased to support Romsey Men’s Shed in any way I can.

"It has received grants from a wide range of bodies, including £18,000 from Test Valley Borough Council’s Community Asset Fund, precisely because it’s members go out into the community and spread benefit for the greater good of that community.

"It is also a uniquely sustainable activity. The Men’s Shed focus on the repair and maintenance of goods is a welcome contrast to the throwaway economy that has grown up in modern times."

Mayor of Romsey Town Council, Cllr Janet Burbidge and Cllr Roy Perry were also in attendance.

There will also be a new member recruitment day on Saturday, November 9 in Romsey Town Centre, followed by open mornings in the shed.

There will also be open mornings between 10am and 12pm on Monday, November 11 until Friday, November 15.
