WORK will soon begin to improve a new £1.14million cycle and pedestrian path linking Chandler’s Ford with Chilworth.

Hampshire County Council will begin the work on Monday, November 18 and it is expected to be completed by Spring 2020.

The works will be carried out during off peak hours between 9.30am to 4pm under two-way traffic lights to minimise any disruption.

It is proposed to provide a three metre wide off–road shared use cycle and footway along Hut Hill, linking Chandlers Ford with Chilworth to improve facilities for those travelling between the settlements.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of HCC, said: "This route has been identified as a major cycle route and one of three north-south connections between Eastleigh district and Southampton for cyclists.

"We know that the existing route is well used by cyclists, with more than 230 journeys a day being made.

"It is an important link between large residential and employment areas, and provides access to schools, local amenities, and leisure facilities.

"These planned improvements mean that this facility will link to the top of The Avenue in Southampton, enabling more people to leave their cars at home and cycle or walk safely to their places of employment or education, contributing to improved air quality in the area."

Mildren Construction Ltd has been appointed by HCC to construct this £1.14 million scheme, which will see the two kilometre path commencing at the Bournemouth Roundabout, close to Hampshire Corporate Business Park and passing over the M27 motorway to connect with the top of The Avenue.

Councillor Humby added: "I apologise for any disturbance that the works may cause but we will try to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.

"However, I would advise that people plan their journeys in advance if using this route. The works are weather dependent and may need to be rearranged at short notice in the event of adverse weather."

Hut Hill is located within both Eastleigh and Test Valley districts and borders Southampton City.
