ANGRY residents have voiced their disgust after rubbish was dumped in a Test Valley road.

Hampshire police were alerted to the fly tip in Eldon Road, Braishfield, forcing police to close the road for the night.

Now police are appealing for witnesses to help track down the offender, who is believed to have tipped the rubbish between 1.30pm and 2pm on Sunday, December 29.

Cllr Dorothy Baverstock, who represents Romsey Cupernham on the borough council, said: "I think it is despicable because when it's windy the rubbish blows about and it damages the countryside, which affects animals.

"The rubbish is very unsightly and what we tend to find is that it is not local people who do this, but people who come in from the city because they do not want to pay to have their rubbish properly dealt with.

"I am totally against tipping of any description and when Test Valley Borough Council find out who it is they will prosecute them; they have got a low-tolerance policy on fly tipping."

She added: "I feel upset for the people who have had their Christmas interrupted and could not use the road.

"The people who have dumped their rubbish are terribly selfish."

Cllr Nick Adams-King, who represents Blackwater on the borough council, said: "This is absolutely disgusting behaviour by selfish anti social people and what has struck me is it seems similar to the Toothill fly tip last week.

"If you are going to employ someone to take your rubbish away then check they are properly licensed because if they are not then we will prosecute you.

"Test Valley Borough Council will see if residents have CCTV in that road to find out who perpetrated this dreadful fly tip."

He added: "Residents can check on the council website where there is a link to see if the person has a license or not."

A spokesperson from Hampshire police said: "We were called just before 2.30pm on December 29 to reports of items being left in the road.

"Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area can call 101, quoting 44190465512."

Test Valley Borough Council has been contacted for comment.
