A CHARITY started by a Hampshire mum after her son was killed in Afghanistan has received £1,000 from a house building firm.

Shrapnel was set up by mum, Sharon Wigley when her son Jonathan died in December 2006.

Now, Persimmon Homes Thames Valley has chosen Shrapnel as its latest Community Champion, a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match funds they have raised themselves.

The money will be used to buy sports wheelchairs for sick and injured veterans preparing to take part in the next Invictus Games.

Sharon Wigley, from Hook said: “My son Marine Jonathan Wigley died in December 2006 and wanting to do something in his memory, I founded Shrapnel.

“We are an extremely small charity run entirely by volunteers. I work my socks off trying to raise money, and we have recently agreed to help buy a fifth chair for an Invictus athlete. The chairs cost about £5,000 each and have to be built specifically for the individual who is using them. Five chairs in one year is a massive achievement for us."
