THE number of people who have died after contracting coronavirus in localised areas has been revealed.

In a comprehensive data release, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) examined more than 20,000 virus deaths registered in England and Wales from March 1 to April 17.

Over this period, the ONS data has 53 recorded deaths involving coronavirus across Southampton. Woolston has the highest number of these deaths with eight, follwed by Hightown with five. Eight areas of Southampton had no recorded deaths over this period.

Across Eastleigh there were 22 recorded deaths involving COVID-19, while the New Forest had 40, Test Valley had 18, Winchester had 30, Fareham had 48 and Gosport had 28.

The ONS has analysed details of the 20,283 deaths that occurred in England and Wales between March 1 and April 17, and which were registered by April 18, where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate as the underlying cause of death or a contributory factor.
