BUDDING musicians at a Romsey school rose to a new challenge set by their teacher this week amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Pupils at Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School, Church Lane, took part in the 'I love music' competition, which saw the children create and send in pictures of what music means to them.

The school's music teacher, Marion Maxey, said: "At Romsey Abbey Primary School we love making music together.

"Whether it’s coming together every day to sing in our whole school worship time, making music in our weekly class music lessons, learning from our individual instrumental teachers, singing in the school choirs, playing in recorder groups or in the school orchestra.

"During lockdown the challenge has been how to keep that musical passion alive for the children; the latest musical activity was an ‘I love Music’ competition.

"The children were given the title and asked to create and send a picture of what ‘I love Music’ means to them."

She added: "I was so excited by the response. The children came up with so many wonderful ideas ranging from drawings and collages to photographs of toy orchestras and singing pet dogs.

"It’s been an absolute joy to see how much music is still a wonderful part of their lives during this difficult time."

Mrs Maxey also created a film of the entries which was sent to pupils so they could see each other’s work, where a winner was chosen from each year group.

During the coronavirus lockdown, the school are continuing to provide work and challenges to children of key workers.

A spokesperson from Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School said: “As well as our daily workouts, during the last few days have done lots of different activities including creating clay letters which really tested our resilience, collaboration and creativity and the children found it great fun especially as it was quite messy.

"Our efforts with finger painting were potentially as messy, but really good and the children managed to create caterpillars by painting with their fingers.

"We have also continued work with our cross stitch coasters and our preparations for VE Day celebrations.”

The music challenge started on Monday, April 27.
