While the leader of Eastleigh Borough Council said that Hedge End Town Council will commence legal action to take the land back.

Commenting on social media, Keith House said: "The recreation ground is owned by the Town Council. Entry to the land was forced yesterday evening.

"The police have attended as have council staff and the Town Council will commence legal action to take the land back. There are more in the St John's Centre car park.

"This is private land: the shops' management company is on the case with this one."

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We are aware of an unauthorised encampment on St John’s recreation ground."
