A ROMSEY gymnastics club could be in with a chance of winning £100,000 in a housebuilder's charity competition.

Starlight Trampoline And Gymnastics Club, Romsey Industrial Estate, has been shortlisted by Persimmon Homes South Coast as one of three groups to represent the region in its Building Futures scheme.

The other groups who made it to the final, and are all in the running to win up to £100,000 each, are Naomi House & Jacksplace in Winchester and Second Chance Children's Charity, Portsmouth.

The scheme will give away £1 million nationally this year to projects that will benefit anyone under 18-years-old.

Now, owner of Starlight Trampoline And Gymnastics Club, Sheryl Milburn, has revealed the prize money would help the club find a bigger location if they take home the gold on Tuesday, October 6.

She said: "It would be wonderful if we won the £100,000 and it would mean the money would help us move somewhere with a bit more space to accommodate everyone.

"We have about 50 people on our waiting list and if we could move to a new location it would mean we could do things so much better.

"We have been in this unit for two years, but [the ceiling] is not quite high enough and we are looking to dig down to create a pit for children to use.

"But, we couldn't do that now, because of coronavirus, as pits are not the most hygienic places."

The 49-year-old, who set up the business 15 years ago, added: "Even if we got the second place prize, which is £50,000, it would be a start and I could begin approaching people, like Sport England and Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC), about moving to a new space."

Managing director of Persimmon Homes South Coast, Matt Paine, said: “Building Futures aims to create a lasting legacy for young people and the groups that support them.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response and it is clear there are a lot of very worthy causes supporting the younger generation and a many local people working exceptionally hard to help them.

"We wish all three of our regional finalists the very best of luck and would urge people to show their support by voting for them at www.persimmonhomes.com/building-futures/ ."

Online voting opened on July 27 and the public can have their say until midnight on September 18.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner at York Racecourse.
