A WATER company has apologised to its customers after a main road leading to Romsey was shut on Wednesday.

A team from Southern Water was working on a mains supply on the A3057 when they found a leak on a second pipe nearby.

It is believed work on the road started on September 15 and, until Wednesday, there was a "traffic light system" for drivers on the A3057, according to a resident.

A spokesperson from Southern Water said: "We were able to use traffic management to keep traffic flowing while working on a mains supply under the road in Ashfield.

"However, when we discovered a leak on a second pipe, which runs very close by it was necessary to react quickly, and the double repair simply takes up more area of the road.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the road closure and wish to assure local residents that we are working as quickly as possible on both repairs."

The roadworks are due to be completed on Sunday at 11.59pm.
