A BURST sewage line has forced a Hampshire car park to close in order to make sure more than 5,000 homes can still use their facilities.

Fire crews and sewage tankers arrived at New Road Car Park this morning following reports of flooding in the area.

A burst rising main near to the library car park has forced the carpark to be closed, and could affect 5,000 homes if not maintained.

Southern Water are dealing with the incident, but said they are unaware of how long the carpark will be closed.

Five sewage tankers were in the area today attempting to extract some of the waste.

It is not sure what has caused the issue, but it is known that the pipe has burst in a wooded area .

The carpark has been closed in order to allow tankering to take place in the area.

This will ensure that more that 5,000 homes in Hythe will still be able to use their facilities.

Southern Water has said they are working to locate and repair the fault as quickly as possible.

A spokesperson said: "We are working on a burst rising main near to the library car park in Hythe and wish to apologies for any inconvenience caused by the closure of the car park itself, which we are using to allow for tankering to take place in the area.

"The tankers are crucial to maintaining services for over 5,100 properties in Hythe meaning that customers can continue to use their facilities.

"At this stage we know the burst is in a wooded area that is hard to access therefore pinpointing the exact location is complex and ongoing."

"We are working safely to locate and repair the fault as quickly as we can and thank customers for their patience."
