POLICE are currently dealing with an incident on the M3.

The northbound motorway has been closed between junction 11 at Compton near Winchester and Junction 12 at Chandler's Ford, around four miles, and it will remain closed for some time.

Hundreds of motorists have been trapped behind the road closure which drivers say appears to have been caused by an accident.

One driver, who asked not to be named, said: "We saw the electronic signs saying 'incident' and the next minute on the M3 we saw the traffic tailing back ahead. We were stuck, not moving an inch for two and three-quarter hours, until about 7.30pm.

"We saw a lot of blue lights from police cars and ambulances coming and going past us. Someone said it was fatal crash but we don't know."

Hampshire Chronicle:

Police officers have been organising convoys of vehicles from the tailback back to junction 12. But some drivers close to the incident were still motionless at 9pm.
