Rishi Sunak was wrong to cut the UK budget for overseas aid, from 0.7% to 0.5% of GDP.
Foreign Office Minister Baroness Sugg has resigned in protest. Whilst the Archbishop of Canterbury, and former Prime Minister’s Tony Blair and David Cameron, have also spoken out.
Covid and Brexit may have seriously damaged the UK economy, but Britain is still a wealthy country. The UK overseas aid budget saves lives, and we should be proud of the contribution we make to helping poorer nations and their citizens.
As a result of this move many more children will die of preventable diseases, and Britain’s strong record on helping those less fortunate than ourselves will be put at risk.
I hope that Southampton’s MP’s will do everything they can to oppose this shameful and immoral decision.
