THE installation of the huge Christmas tree heralds the arrival of the festive season, as Winchester Cathedral announces what’s on and a new location for the Christmas Market.

While Covid-19 has meant the Christmas Market cannot go ahead in its usual form, the Cathedral has moved the event to a festive online experience.

The new Christmas Market website, launched on November 22, enables people to shop with the independent retailers, producers and charities who would normally be within the cathedral grounds.

The festive website brings together everything Christmas at the cathedral including details of Christmas Services, events and activities happening both in the cathedral and online.

Visitors to the website can find out how to take part in a community art installation; enter a Christmas poetry competition; learn about the history of Christmas at the cathedral; get craft ideas; or simply take time out with daily advent reflections. There is even a Christmas Carols advent calendar, sung by the Winchester Cathedral choir.

The Very Rev Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester said: “We recognise it has been a tough year for many and want to do everything possible to bring comfort and joy to all this festive season.

“The pandemic has restricted and prevented many activities so we are delighted to offer new ways to engage online, meaning everyone can join in, wherever they are. We’re also pleased to be able to continue with cherished traditional services and activities in the cathedral, including the giant Christmas tree in the nave.”

The 25foot Christmas tree, which is always generously funded by the Friends of Winchester Cathedral, was installed last week.

The heavy lifting began when cathedral staff set about bringing the massive tree inside the building and installing it beneath the great west window. [see pictures] This year, there will also be four extra trees to discover in the cathedral, including a tree of hope.
