ANGRY drivers have slammed a local authority for scrapping parking fees in Romsey, claiming it has been “a nightmare” after charges were ditched to help people during the first and second lockdown.

As reported, Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) is set to reinstate parking charges tomorrow, eight days since the lockdown was lifted.

Cllr John Parker, who represents Romsey Tadburn on TVBC, told the Advertiser last week if the scheme could help boost the local economy he would encourage the Cabinet to keep suspending parking charges in place in the run-up to Christmas.

Now residents have vented their anger on the Advertiser's Facebook page over the charges being freezed, with some believing it has taken them 30 minutes to find a space.

One woman said: "My clients have all struggled to park this week, some waiting 30 mins to get a parking space, it’s been a nightmare."

Another Romsey woman commented: "It was easier to park when there was a charge or a ticket time limit for say two, three or four hours.

"I’m a retailer and clients are struggling to get in as they are driving round every car park forever to unsuccessfully find spaces."

One woman even claimed "a lot of retail staff" could be making it harder for shoppers to park if they are taking up some spaces.

However, one man argued parking should "always be free" in the town, believing it will attract more shoppers.

Another person wrote: "I think parking should be free, but [for a] limited time, like no more than four hours allowing time to shop and lunch."

Cllr Parker commented: "Since I was interviewed by the Romsey Advertiser it has become obvious the free parking has not had the desired effect.

"I have reports of shoppers and other visitors being unable to find a parking place. I have brought this to the attention of TVBC and it is hoped that the situation will come under control once charges come back later this week."
