NETFLIX's hit period drama Bridgerton has officially been renewed for season two, it has been confirmed.

Based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance novels, the show won an army of fans after it courted 63 million households in its first three weeks alone since it was released on Christmas Day.

The streaming giant confirmed the news today (January 21) in a statement penned as the show's mysterious narrator, Lady Whistledown.

It reads: "The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honour to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season.

"I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion."

Production of the upcoming series will begin in the spring of 2021, with the series set to focus on Anthony Bridgerton's (Jonathan Bailey) goal to find a wife following his chaotic love life in season one.

Bridgerton is produced by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland and has been described as Gossip Girl meets Downton Abbey.

Season one focuses on Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) romance with the rebellious Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page).
