A TOWN abbey and local authority will fly their flags at half-mast today in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore, who passed away.

The 100-year-old charity fundraiser was rushed to Bedford Hospital on Sunday, after being treated for pneumonia for some time and testing positive for Covid-19 last week.

The World War Two veteran, who raised £33 million for NHS charities by walking in his back garden during the pandemic, did not have the vaccine because he was on medication for pneumonia.

He passed away surrounded by members of his family yesterday.

Romsey Abbey, Church Lane, and Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) confirmed they would fly the flag in memory of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

A spokesperson from Romsey Abbey said: "Today, we are flying our Union Flag at half-mast to pay tribute to the incredible Captain Sir Tom Moore.

"He raised the nation’s spirits and has been an inspiration, we thank him for blessing us all with his humility and courage.

"We share our deepest condolences and sympathies with his family and loved ones at this sad time."

In a Facebook post yesterday, Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) said he would "be missed by all" and was "a hero in so many ways".
