RESIDENTS said work to repair "disgusting" and "dangerous" potholes in a busy Southampton road is "well overdue".

A number of residents living in Paynes Road, in Freemantle, said the road surface has deteriorated over the past months.

It comes as work to repair the road is expected to be carried out over the next few months, it has been revealed.

Local resident Sarah Shah, 53, account manager, said: "It is well overdue. Look at the potholes, they are disgusting. I think they are dangerous for everyone. You can trip and fall. In my opinion they should have more restrictions on traffic because traffic is not helping it at all, there's lots of heavy lorries."

Pensioner Annette Moody, 70, has been living in Paynes Road for the past 30 years.

She said: "It is only over the last few years that [it] got bad. We got lot of lorries that cut through and they do a bit of damage. There are too many lorries and they should not come up here. I am very relieved it is going to get done."

Resident Jeremy Hayes, 37, a senior library assistant, said: "It definitively needs something doing to it, it is definitively time."

Cllr Dave Shields, Labour candidate in Freemantle, said: "What we have been doing is working with council's partner Balfour Beatty and the residents to get this road higher up on the list and it is now on the plan for this June."

Vikkie Cheng, Conservatives candidate for the ward, said fixing potholes in Freemantle is a priority.

"We need to fix them properly. It is a big problem and this is a priority. Paynes Road is one of the worst that we need to look at," she added.

Andy Beal, Liberal Democrats candidate, said: "I drive and cycle down Paynes Road every day. The increasing number and size of existing potholes is becoming a concern. Such a major thoroughfare needs proper investment and not just a quick fix."

All parties who have put forward candidates in Freemantle  have been contacted .

Southampton City Council has also been approached for comment.
