THOUSANDS of music fans could flock to watch an opera star this summer if plans for a concert near Romsey are approved.

Welsh opera singer, Katherine Jenkins, could entertain more than 3,000 fans at Embley, Embley Park, Wellow, according to plans submitted to Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC).

If the proposals are given the green light, Ms Jenkins and a 34 piece orchestra will perform on Sunday, August 22, as part of the weekend event staged by the Turnbull Group.

It is set to begin on Saturday, August 21, according to a Facebook post from councillor Nick Adams-King.

The event would be in aid of the charities Race Against Dementia and Naomi House Children’s Hospice - which can be found in Romsey.

On Saturday, up to 500 people could be treated to a VIP lunch, with live music welcoming them to the school's scenic grounds.

In the evening, more than 3,000 revellers may get the chance to dance the night away until 11pm with a Cafe Mambo party theme.

It is believed live music could be played from 12pm to 4pm and from 5pm to 11pm on Saturday, while on Sunday live music could be played from 7.30pm to 11pm.

Recorded music may be played from 5pm to 11pm on Sunday, if the plans are given the nod.

Drinkers could enjoy alcohol on the site from 12pm to 11pm on Saturday, and from 5pm to 11pm on Sunday, the councillor's post adds.

Liberal democrat, Dorothy Baverstock, threw her support behind the plans, but aired concerns over traffic congestion in the countryside.

She explained: "I approve of anything that is outdoors, because we are all meant to be making the most of being outdoors with coronavirus, and if you're getting someone like Katherine Jenkins there is going to be a fairly big audience.

"It is a brilliant idea and anything that raises money for dementia is great.

"I hope they will give considerable thought to the traffic movement of nearly 4,000 people, which probably is at least 2,000 cars in the countryside, because you cannot hop on the train for this."

The Turnbull Group has been contacted for comment.
