A BODY has been found at the scene of a house fire that took hold earlier today.

Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed the body had been found inside the home following the incident in Romsey this morning.

Five crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue tackled the blaze until just before 10.30am on Winchester Road in Crampmoor.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has now begun.

Speaking at the scene, nearby residents Anne Meader and her husband Ken, who were evacuated from their home, said: "I was woken at about 6.30am and heard a bang - it sounded like something falling off the roof.

"My husband looked out and saw smoke. I picked up the phone and dialled 999 before getting dressed and going out the front door.

"We saw flames coming out of the house as well. The whole place has gone."

More to follow.
