Four persons from Andover have been arrested in connection with the assault on a 62-year-old man at Tesco Extra on River Way, police have confirmed.

A 27-year-old man from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, while three others from Andover have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, police said.

The victim is hospitalised with head injuries, and his condition is currently described as life threatening.

The incident happened at around 9.20pm yesterday (Thursday).

According to police, the arrested four remain in custody at this time.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary told the Advertiser: “The incident happened at around 9.20pm yesterday, 29 July, outside the Tesco store.

“The victim has been taken to hospital with a head injury, his condition is currently described as life threatening.

“Officers will be in the area conducting enquiries to establish the exact circumstances.

“A 27-year-old man from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

“An 18-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman, all from Andover, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“All four remain in custody at this time.”

Police are also seeking information from the public regarding the incident.

A police cordon has been erected outside Tesco Extra in Andover on Friday morning with officers on the scene.

Tesco Extra remains open to shoppers, with customers able to enter through both sides of the shop due to the cordon.
