Dorothy Baverstock, Unity's Chair of Trustees, was presented with the British Empire Medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire on behalf of the Queen.

Particular attention was given to Dorothy’s work with the Unity, formerly known as the Test Valley Community Services, which she helped to establish in 1988.

The ceremony took place at the Great Hall, Winchester on July 7 at 11am where 24 residents of Hampshire received their awards after being placed on the 2020 honours list.

Over the years, Dorothy has also worked with charities such as Age Concern, Friends of the Romsey War Memorial Park and Citizens Advice Bureau.

When she retired 18 years ago, Dorothy became more involved with the towns council and was elected to both Borough council and Town Council.

Just six years ago, she was elected for Romsey extra Parish Council.

In 2012, Dorothy was elected Mayor of Test Valley and has been elected Mayor of Romsey three times.

Dorothy said: ”I was amazed at being a recipient of this award because I feel I am only a small cog in a very large wheel of the Unity family.
