A RESIDENT lost their deposit and was left "distraught" after falling victim to an Airbnb rental scam.
Officers from Poole Neighbourhood Policing Team issued a warning following a report from a member of the community.
A spokesperson for the team said:"A fake profile had been created on the website using various images taken from another rental site.
"The scammer then proceeded to request a deposit despite the property not being viewed prior.
"The result - A lost deposit and distraught individual that had been scammed.
"If it's too good a deal, the likelihood is it isn't true. Please use reputable companies and estate agents and always view the house in person before exchanging any money.
"If you believe you have been scammed, please report it to 101 and Action Fraud via telephone or online."
Airbnb is an online marketplace for renting properties, which is mainly used for holiday and tourist trips. It has become increasingly prominent and popular in recent years.
