HIS spectacular shots captured the moment Bobby Stokes scored to bring Saints an historic FA Cup victory and the legendary original Isle of Wight Festivals starring Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Who.

Former Daily Echo photographer Patrick Brookes was also on hand to record performances by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, welcome the great cruise liners to Southampton and capture images of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Pat, as he was always known, was born on June 2 1947 in Southampton and attended Bitterne Park Infants School. He was most put out when, on his sixth birthday, all the parties seemed to be celebrating the Queen's coronation rather than his big day.

Moving to Hill Head in 1958, Pat enjoyed swimming and cycling in the countryside. He missed his exams due to glandular fever and instead interviewed for a trainee journalist's job at the Echo, later switching to photography.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Pat left home at 18, moving to a flat in Southampton, and married his first wife Diana at the age of 20. They had two children, Vicky and Matthew, and settled in Hedge End.

Pat enjoyed the hospitality and travel occasionally afforded him as a photographer, then picture editor, and later went on to work for The Mayflower as their press officer, marketing shows like Phantom of the Opera.

In 1984, Pat married Jayne and they welcomed daughter Charlotte.

The couple, who lived in Cadnam and later Romsey, loved to entertain and travel, enjoying trips to China, India, Madagascar, New Zealand, South Africa, Mauritius and The Seychelles, as well as regular travels to the South of France and other parts of Europe.

Pat passed away peacefully last month in the hospital where he was born following a long battle with cancer.

Pat leaves his wife Jayne, children Matthew and Charlotte and grandsons Ben, Maxim, Toby and Leo. Sadly, his eldest daughter Vicky passed away last year.
