A LOCAL group of volunteers are set to help clean up Romsey Canal this weekend.

The group have come together to clean up the old canal as part of the 'Future Romsey' project.

The old canal, over the years has declined for various reasons including lowered water levels, general lack of maintenance and the Fishlake Nature Reserve.

Volunteers will be looking to trim back the overgrown foliage, remove some smaller trees and generally tidy up the once operative canal but more volunteers are needed.

The group associated with Wilder Romsey are teaming up under the guidance of Test Valley Borough Council this weekend, October 22 and 23 between 10pm and 2pm with leaders directing on the day.

The clean up will be arranged into three groups on each of the days and equipment will be provided but for those wanting to take part it is advised to bring thick gloves.

TVBC’s climate emergency champion, Neil Gwynne said: "The more the merrier. To come down at the weekend, will not only give you a fuller picture of the situation but to help with the work is appreciated. The canal won’t be exactly what it used to be and there are good reasons for that."
