PLANS to partly demolish a building in a busy Southampton neighbourhood to make way for new homes have been unveiled.

Four new homes could be built at the site once occupied by Parkroad Motorcycles in  Shirley Road.

Part of the empty motorbike dealership building could be knocked down to make way for two two-bedroom homes, one four-bedroom and a three-bedroom house.

The plans have been put forward by Ash Bajar.

A final decision on the scheme will be made by the Planning and Rights of Way Panel at Southampton City Council on December 14.

Planning bosses in the city have recommended approval of the plans.

But some residents raised concerns over the impact of the new homes on traffic and parking.

Local resident Andy Noyce said: “It’s currently difficult to park especially with two churches and a restaurant using the space as well.

“Extra flats being built would cause chaos as there is nowhere for them to park.”

Ward councillor Dave Shields also raised concerns and referred the proposals to the planning committee.

He said: “I wish to object to this application for a conversion to residential apartments as there is inadequate provision for off road parking in an area which already experiences severe problems in the neighbouring residential streets.”

Planners said the location is “highly accessible” and served by regular bus services.

They added: “Daytime parking controls for the nearby residential streets will further minimise the overspill parking in local streets within 200m of the site to the west Shirley Road.”

They also said the scheme would assist in meeting housing need.

Tomorrow’s meeting will begin at 4pm.
