The funeral and service of remembrance for Muriel Clarke took place at Romsey Baptist Church recently.

Members of the church and friends gathered on January 13 to celebrate Muriel’s life and her membership of the baptist church since 1973.

Muriel had been a WREN during the war and married her husband Norman in 1943. She had also been a cinematographer until 1944 and was subsequently promoted to Third Officer, working in the cypher office.

Muriel had moved to Romsey in with Norman and immediately set about being part of the community. She was a member of The Townswomen’s Guild and acted in the plays that they performed.

For many years she was the postmistress at Woodley. At the church, she ran the women’s evening fellowship for many years, hosting it in her house and had a good reputation as hostess.

She was always willing to bake for church occasions and for many years ran the church kitchen with her sister Rosemary.

In later years she had been a member of the Thursday fellowship at the church. For the last few years she had been a resident at Abbotswood Care Home where she celebrated her 100th birthday in 2020.

On that occasion, due to government restrictions at the time, she couldn't celebrate in the normal fashion, so 30 of her friends and family stood outside the care home to wish her happy birthday, along with the Halfpenny family brass group who played a few songs for the centenarian.
