A FITNESS centre in Romsey has been burgled for the second time in a year.

Curves, a gym for women, was broken into by thieves overnight on Wednesday, January 26.

The fitness centre, located outside of Romsey train station in Station Road, suffered significant damage to a window, which the thieves used to climb into the building.

Assistant manager Jan Godden said: "One of the girls who works here drove into the car park to open up in the morning and noticed that the window was smashed on the side, which was the second time.

"We were broken into at exactly the same spot last September. They took about £300 of our charity money but not a lot else. There was nothing else to take but they made quite a lot of mess."

Between last Wednesday and early hours of Thursday morning, thieves smashed a window of the building to gain entry, where a purse was stolen out of a filing cabinet, along with £20 in coins.

Ms Godden, who has worked at Curves for around eight years, said: "There was no damage done as such, apart from the window and the filing cabinet, but they made quite a lot of mess. I think they're just looking for quick cash because they didn't take the computer or the stereo system and the machines are too heavy to move.

"It's horrible because every time we drive into the car park in the morning you automatically look at the window to make sure it's not broken. It just makes me feel angry because this is a place our members should feel safe coming to."

Police are investigating the incident and Ms Godden said they have taken DNA from the scene.

However she is calling for more action from the police to ensure it does not happen again.

She said: "Apart from forensics, no one else has been out, no local bobby to make sure we're alright and feeling secure. It's like we don't matter."

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating a report of a burglary at Curves Gym, Romsey, which occurred sometime in the night between Wednesday, January 26 and Thursday, January 27.

"It was reported a quantity of money was stolen. Enquiries are ongoing, anyone with information can call 101, quoting the reference 44220035963."
