PLANS for an extension at a house in Romsey have been met with objections.

Romsey Town Council's planning committee objected to plans for the extension on a semi-detached three-bedroom house in Malmesbury Road as they fear it would make the building too tall.

The plan, submitted by Mr and Mrs Hammonds, is for a two-storey rear extension with windows, which the proposals say would "improve the connectivity between the kitchen and living spaces and provide better access to the garden."

However, councillors objected to the plans and to an additional parapet because they said it would make the extension taller than necessary.

A neighbour had also submitted an objection.

Cllr Mark Cooper said: “There is a design flaw. It has a flat roof, which is great, but is has a parapet around it which gives it significant additional height and that means there is more overshadowing on the neighbour's garden than would otherwise be necessary. I was wondering if it could be designed without a parapet which would reduce the impact on the neighbour.”

Cllr John Critchley agreed and said: “It is quite large, the neighbour already has an extension, so I think it would affect the sunlight on the neighbour's garden.”

Cllr John Parker, chairman of the planning committee, said: “We wish to issue an objection and in the comment we will say we have no objection to the two-storey element. But the one-storey element, particularly with the addition of the parapet, adversely affects the amenity of the neighbour and may well cause unacceptable shadowing.”

It will now go to Test Valley Borough Council's planning committee for final decision, date yet to be announced. To view the plans go to testvalley.gov.uk/, search reference 22/00372/FULLS.
