THE Romsey Art Group has returned to something of a normal programme with a fresh and invigorating spring exhibition of fine art, pottery and sculpture, at their Mountbatten Gallery at Lee, near Romsey.

A spokesperson for the group said: "While not all members are back on track yet with their output for exhibiting, 63 members have provided a wealth of enjoyable browsing and this review can only pick out a few pieces that catch the eye.

"It is not often an artist can capture the feel of the great masters in their work, but Stephen Shrimpton has done just that with two exquisite classic oil still life subjects.

"Copper and Silk and Still life with Lemons and Keys both meticulously executed, as is the mixed media offering from Clare Fraser Tango so evocative of the sensual dance using a geometric and figurative representation. More traditional is Robert Sharpe’s charming pastel New Friends depicting a little girl dwarfed by, but obviously enjoying her moment with a shire horse. Another pastel which catches the eye is the Portrait of John Lennon by Anne Adams who shows a particular gift for capturing the character of her subject. An impressionist take in acrylic, entitled The Souk, drips off the canvas to create all the atmosphere of a bustling market.

"Romsey Art Group pottery group members and sculptors are also noted for their original, hand-produced work which is very popular and affordable. Among Neal Griffin’s selection is a delicately worked Pangolin which really demonstrates his command of the medium. Lucinda Graham presents two head sculptures,, Virginia and Hope, with an obvious expertise in creating her work. Pauline Appleby’s Chickens, Liz Tubb’s Vishnu Elephant, Michael Whatley’s Boxing Hares and Ruth Lewis’ Mermaid in a Conch Shell are all excellent examples among many of the array of ceramics presented.

"There is talent in abundance in this show and if you haven’t caught up with it yet it is recommended you take a final opportunity to do so on Saturday, May 14, 10am – 4pm. The refreshments are pretty good too!"
