A KEEN golfer who lives at a Romsey care home wants to keep puting her best foot forward after a nostalgic trip to her former club.

The team at Woodley Grange care home, in Winchester Hill, wanted to drive forward their efforts and arranged a special trip to Stoneham Golf Club for Audrey Mullan.

The club holds many treasured memories of her late husband Bertie and the countless rounds of golf with her closest friends as well as the cherished tradition of the 'nineteenth hole'.

“It felt like going back to those amazing old times and it’s definitely awakened the golfer within me,” said the 95-year-old.

“It was a home away from home for me and to see my husband’s name up on the board for a hole in one brought back so many wonderful memories.”

The trip rekindled her connection with the sport, bringing back memories of teeing off and the social scene at the club where she made lifelong friends.

On the day of her visit, Audrey was accompanied by her son Nigel, and club pro Ian Stoneham, who took her to the range to test out her swing.

Inspired by the visit, Audrey expressed her desire to get a putter to continue her connection with the sport at the care home.

Nigel said: “Having seen how much mum loved the experience and meeting up with Ian again, it has made me want to take up golf again but I still don’t think my shot will be as straight as hers!”

Care home manager Liliana Macieira said: “We were thrilled to see how happy Audrey was on the trip and she hasn’t stopped smiling since she came back.

“Reliving cherished memories while creating new ones is a cornerstone of our approach to care.

“It is obvious how much her connection with golf means to her and for us to be able to help her enjoy this trip with her son Nigel was really special.

“Audrey's golf club visit has brought smiles to everyone on the team and we will now have to try and find a place for her to keep practicing her putting.”
