A 91-year-old Wickham woman was targeted by conmen at the weekend.

Police said that at around noon on Saturday, August 9, two men called at the pensioner's home, in St Nicholas Row, School Road, claiming to be from the water board.

The pair talked their way into the property saying there was a drainage problem and that they needed £90 to buy some materials.

The elderly woman said she didn't have all the money but gave one of the men £30, however, the other man persuaded his colleague to hand the money back and they both left the property.

Both suspects are described as white, aged in their late 30s, around 5ft 10, heavy set, with short dark brown hair and one of the men wore a long sleeved black jacket with white writing the front on the left hand side.

PC Nicholas Wisdom said: "This attempted deception took place in the middle of the day in a residential area. There would be lots of people out and about at that time.

"I would ask that anyone who saw these men, saw any vehicle they were in, spoke to them, or had them in their house, to contact police as soon as possible.

"This occurrence is relatively rare but I would ask the public to insist that they see ID from all persons visiting their homes and seeking entry to them."
