SIR — Can I comment on the proposal (Chronicle, December 18) that Bishop’s Waltham Parish Council should pay half of the running costs of the public toilets in the town?

The toilets primarily serve those using the adjacent car park operated by Winchester City Council, and it would appear that the city council’s objective is to continue to take the parking revenues whilst ‘parking’ half of the costs of the loo with the parish council.

Householders in Bishop’s Waltham already shoulder one of the highest parish rates in the city council area.

The Band D parish rate (£113.86) is already twice that of those living in Winchester Town (£55.04) and the transfer of these costs to the parish council will do nothing to address this injustice.
