SIR — While appreciating the University of Winchester’s financial contribution to the economy of the city, I am concerned about its attitude to its neighbours as stated by Tommy Geddes, deputy vice-chancellor.

On November 21, 2007, Mr Geddes stated: “The University needs to take care to ensure that its presence in this part of the city causes as little inconvenience to our residential neighbours to the south of the site as is reasonable without compromising on the services we offer to our students”.

On December 3, 2008, Mr Geddes voiced unequivocal determination to proceed with on and off-campus expansion projects as outlined in the university’s master plan to 2017, to an audience of seriously concerned Sparkford Road area neighbours.

When did the University change its mind — and why?
