A VETERAN journalist was honoured at a celebration of success at the University of Winchester on Tuesday.

Former BBC South Today reporter, Antiques Roadshow presenter and Appleshaw resident Bruce Parker received an honourary fellowship for services to broadcasting and presenting as part of the university’s graduation ceremony.

Eight graduation ceremonies were being held this week, recognising achievements of both students and careers of prominent public figures.

In his speech after receiving the university honour in Winchester Cathedral, Bruce said: “This really is one of the proudest moments of my life.

“I love the city of Winchester, I love the cathedral where I spend so much time and now it’s absolutely wonderful to be a part of the city’s great university.”

After taking part in a pre-ceremony procession through Winchester, Bruce was joined inside the cathedral by his wife, Suzanne, and daughter, Sarah. Several hundred students received their degrees at Tuesday’s ceremony.

Professor Joy Carter, University of Winchester vice-chancellor said: “We are incredibly proud of our graduates and we wish them the best of luck as they leave Winchester with the knowledge, wisdom and strength to make a real difference in the world.

“It is also a delight to recognise the achievements, distinguished careers and contributions to society of some inspirational individuals with the award of honorary doctorates and fellowships.”
