A CAREGIVER who goes the extra mile and has been described as ‘an angel without wings’ has been nominated for a national award for his efforts.

Pete Newberry is one of five finalists who are in the running for at-home care company Home Instead Senior Care’s national Caregiver of the Year Award.

Pete, 67, began working as a caregiver in March 2017 after retiring and moving to Andover. Pete realised that he wanted to continue working and making a difference in his community, so he responded to a Home Instead article he saw in a magazine.

Clients and family members of those he cares for have been abundant in giving their praise to Pete, applauding his caring nature.

One family member of a client Pete cares for said: “He is amazing, he is the tops, he really is superb,” while a daughter of another client said: “He must have worked so hard with my dad, but never let it show.”

When one of Pete’s clients was desperate to go on a holiday and felt trapped and frustrated in his inability to go on one, Pete volunteered to escort him on a special trip away.

He spent time planning the trip, steering towards a holiday that was manageable, thinking through all the details to make it a success.

He also involved the family and helped his client visit his daughter which he had not done in a very long time.

Award organisers said the whole process had a positive effect Pete’s client, who had also been recovering from a broken hip after a fall.

Pete was put forward for the award by owner of Home Instead Andover and West Wiltshire, Nell Light.

In nominating him, Nell said: “Pete is endlessly enthusiastic, positive and supportive towards his clients, the office team and other caregivers.

“He is passionate about the quality of care he delivers and is always seeking new training or knowledge with which he can improve. Pete is supportive of what Home Instead is trying to achieve and as such is such an amazing ambassador for our business.”
