VILLAGERS braved the weather to keep a tradition alive as they turned out in force for the Overton Wheelbarrow Race last weekend.

Residents lined the streets to donate spare change and cheer on the runners, who had kitted out both themselves and their wheelbarrows in their very best fancy dress.

The race began at its usual starting point on Pound Road, with participants stopping by five pubs for half a pint before heading to the finish line at Bridge Street, where an after party was held at Overton Recreation Centre.

Organiser Gary Savory said: “I was worried about the weather, because Friday was bad so we were a little bit concerned it was going to be a washout, but actually the whole village and in particular the racers embraced the weather, especially at the after party.”

The wheelbarrow race is an Overton tradition which has been held in the village on and off for the last 30 years.

This year’s event featured 110 entrants comprising 15 teams, with awards given for both the fastest and best dressed participants.

Kevin Hogan and Keith Lock were the fastest pair, while first prize for fancy dress went to Charlie Gray and his Harry Potter team, who modelled their wheelbarrow into the Hogwarts Express. They pipped Dean Barton’s team by the narrowest of margins, who went with a similarly brilliant Shrek theme.

“Some of the more seasoned race goers said it was the best year yet,” Gary added.

“The level of detail for both handcrafted wheelbarrows was the best I’ve ever seen, so the decision was very close.”

Proceeds from the race went to Overton Recreation Centre.

Gary added: “Thanks to the pubs, thanks to all the volunteers who were marshalling or running the bars at the after event, and same again next year!”
